Since my undergraduate studies at San Marcos University, I have been interested in research and continuous training, this is how rotating at Weill Cornell University-New York motivated me to show the medicine of my country to the world. When I finished my training as a specialist in Radiotherapy, I rotated in Santiago de Chile – IRAM Clinic, with the aim of learning new treatment techniques that could benefit my patients. With what has been learned during these years of academic training and promoted by the attendings of the Radiation Oncology Service, we set the goal of reporting the casuistry of our pediatric patients, which can contribute to the scientific community and show possible treatments in rare pediatric diseases.

We achieved the first objective, which is to present 02 clinical cases and 01 case series at SIOP 2023. I have the vision that the Radiotherapy Service of my hospital continues to grow in techniques and applying modern protocols for pediatric patients, thus seeking our second objective: to become a reference hospital for the management of pediatric oncological pathologies. Other oncology topics in which I participate as a member of the multidisciplinary team are gynecological tumors, lung cancer and cancer of the central nervous system.
Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13784320742969554774noreply@blogger.com0Ottawa, ON, Canada45.4215296 -75.69719309999999317.111295763821154 -110.85344309999999 73.731763436178852 -40.540943099999993tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6480535517644279303.post-59919671430191218632023-09-24T21:00:00.011-07:002023-09-24T21:00:00.138-07:00Meet the 2023 Young SIOP awardees - Hellen Mugarra Kabahweza
Hi there! I work at the Joint Clinical Research Centre, Global-Hope’s Uganda site of paediatric hematology-oncology, based at the Mulago national specialized hospital. I am a registered nurse with a bachelor's degree in health services management (2012), masters’ degrees in monitoring and evaluation (2017) and public health from the University of Manchester (2022).

My research interests are in strengthening health systems, and, more lately, providing psychosocial support to children with cancer. I have taken part in a variety of initiatives, primarily to support patients with cancer, their families and caregivers. This has mostly been done alongside the provision of counselling services, bereavement support, securing funding for patient transportation, clothing, supportive care, and nutritional support. Due to the lengthy nature of treatment, this support has decreased the caregivers' workload and enhanced the retention of children in care. An abstract describing these efforts was approved for presentation at the SIOP 2023 Congress.

My other research was a systematic review to assess the efficacy of chemotherapy alone in managing children with Hodgkin lymphoma in SSA. Using the random effects model, the pooled estimate for overall survival in that population was 67.8 % (95% CI: 42.1-88.8%), mortality was 30.8 % (95% CI: 12.9-52.3%), and treatment-related deaths were 8.2 % (95% CI: 1.4-19.7). These results suggest that chemotherapy alone may be sufficient for treating children with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma however, more studies with adequate power are required to ascertain this. An abstract on this has been submitted for possible publication and has been accepted for presentation at the SIOP 2023 Congress.

I have been privileged to be awarded the Young SIOP Investigator Award 2023, and I'm excited to present those presentations in Canada this year.

Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13784320742969554774noreply@blogger.com0Ottawa, ON, Canada45.4215296 -75.69719309999999317.111295763821154 -110.85344309999999 73.731763436178852 -40.540943099999993tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6480535517644279303.post-40695225290702611882023-09-21T21:00:00.016-07:002023-09-21T21:00:00.149-07:00Meet the 2023 Young SIOP awardees - Padma Sagarika Karri
Hi there! I’m Padma Sagarika Karri, a Fellow in Pediatric Oncology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. I hail from Vizag, the city of destiny, located on the east coast of India. I’ve completed my medical school training and residency in Pediatrics at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry. It is here that I learned to use technical skill, scientific knowledge, and human understanding with courage, humility, and wisdom, in the care of the suffering. Evolving science, challenging patient care, multidisciplinary collaboration, and teamwork involved in Pediatric Oncology have led to my interest in the subject. Astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience (I'm an astronomy enthusiast and Carl Sagan fan), and I feel Pediatric Oncology does the same. The art of it is more intriguing than the science.

It is said that the true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members. It has been a privilege to have been trained at institutes that provide exemplary care, free of cost, to the socio-economically disadvantaged. I aspire to work at centers that focus on providing low-cost quality care to the socio-economically disadvantaged sections of the community.

My research interests include the epidemiology of childhood cancer, quality improvement, and implementation science. I’d like to advance my knowledge in these areas of interest. Optimal utilization of available resources is crucial for the delivery of quality cancer care and more work needs to be done in our setting to achieve this. I firmly believe in Doug Altman’s words – we need better research, research done for the right reasons.

I’m thankful to Foundation S - My Child Matters and Young SIOP Network for the scholarship. Our work on the feasibility of an oral-supportive care regimen during high-dose methotrexate administration in children with hematolymphoid malignancies has been selected for presentation at SIOP 2023. It would be a pleasure to attend my first SIOP annual conference and experience global collaboration for the improvement of the lives of children with cancer.

Onwards and Upwards!
Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13784320742969554774noreply@blogger.com0Ottawa, ON, Canada45.4215296 -75.69719309999999317.111295763821154 -110.85344309999999 73.731763436178852 -40.540943099999993tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6480535517644279303.post-60103907015951650492023-09-19T21:00:00.011-07:002023-09-19T21:00:00.205-07:00Meet the 2023 Young SIOP awardees - Elvia Grillo
Hi there! My PhD project focuses on the psychosocial aspects of germline sequencing in children with cancer. A topic at the intersection of pediatric oncology, psycho-oncology, ethics, and genetics that has fascinated me since I first encountered it as a master's student. The interdisciplinary nature of this field is also reflected in the diverse backgrounds of my supervisors, including prof. dr. M.A. Grootenhuis, prof. dr. M.M. van den Heuvel-Eibrink, dr. M.C.J. Jongmans and dr. R.H.P. Wouters. Our study is conducted in close collaboration with genetic researchers, such as prof. dr. R Kuiper, prof. dr. HM. Merks, dr. J. Hol and J. Bakhuizen.

What I like about our work is that we conduct both qualitative and quantitative research. Interviews with parents and patients allow us to really zoom in on the experiences of a small number of families, while our questionnaire study provides us insight into the experiences of a large number of families. In general, we find that families want to be actively involved in decisions regarding their DNA. Parents and adolescents also believe that children should, from a young age onwards, receive information regarding genetic testing. It is also important to note that a significant proportion of the families refuses germline genetic sequencing. In the final stages of our project, we will develop educational tools to support counseling. Our aim is to ensure that every family can make a choice that suits them.

We are honored that the SIOP scientific board has recognized our interview study among adolescents with a SIOP Young Investigator Award 2023. The diagnosis of any tumor is based on morphology and genetic analysis which is only possible by biopsy. However, it is not always feasible to obtain tissue tumor biopsy due to its invasive nature. Also, the tumor heterogeneity and minimal residual disease (MRD) will remain undetected. To overcome these problems, liquid biopsies can be a non-invasive alternative. Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in liquid biopsies from patients with cancer can be used for diagnostic and prognostic purposes. The level of ctDNA at diagnosis correlates with tumor burden. Liquid biopsies also overcome the problem of spatial or (sub)clonal tumor heterogeneity, facilitating increased diagnostic accuracy and enabling MRDs detection and therapy response monitoring. Furthermore, ctDNA offers the opportunity to investigate clonal evolution of the tumor and possible distant lesions throughout the body at several time points during treatment. We aim to translate ctDNA-based sequencing approaches of liquid biopsies into pediatric patients – specifically, those with solid tumors.
Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13784320742969554774noreply@blogger.com0Ottawa, ON, Canada45.4215296 -75.69719309999999317.111295763821154 -110.85344309999999 73.731763436178852 -40.540943099999993tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6480535517644279303.post-40030478720839057052023-09-10T21:00:00.013-07:002023-09-10T21:00:00.236-07:00Meet the 2023 Young SIOP awardees - Lydia Rink
Hi there! My findings showcase that structural connectivity in the brain directly influences neural communication and cognition, and white matter compromise has an indirect adverse impact on cognition via perturbed neural communication in children and youth treated for brain tumors. I received my BSc in Nutrition and Dietetics and my MSc in Clinical Nutrition from Harokopio University of Athens; I also hold a MMedSc with a Major in Public Health Sciences from Karolinska Institutet.

My research focuses on childhood cancer epidemiology. By utilizing the long-standing Swedish health data registers, I strive to elucidate which birth defects could be predisposing towards childhood cancer—and whether they might also affect survival after the cancer diagnosis. Other work focuses on how parental environmental exposures relate to childhood cancer and birth defects. The overall aim—and connecting thread between my projects—is to increase the understanding of childhood cancer etiology and survival. I am deeply honored to have received recognition for this work with the 2021 and 2022 SIOP Young Investigator Award and I am looking forward to the 2022 conference!

Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13784320742969554774noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6480535517644279303.post-37502472464126508752022-09-19T21:00:00.003-07:002022-09-19T21:00:00.232-07:00Meet the 2022 Young SIOP awardees - Nikhil Kumar
Hi there!
