Doing a Postdoc abroad: From Brazil to the US – part 1

Doing a Postdoc abroad: From Brazil to the US – part 1

by Francianne Andrade

Hi readers! When are you planning to stop your studies? Well, if you are reading this post, I imagine you would say: “never”! We always have something to learn and being engaged in science requires a passion for what you are working on. If you are seeking to improve your career in academia, doing a postdoc is a great option.
My name is Francianne Andrade, I am a Biomedical Scientist from Brazil with MSc and PhD in Oncology. This is the first of two posts about a career of a Young Investigator. After 10 years of my professional development, I decided to move forward as a postdoc. You might ask yourself if 10 years did not suffice. To answer this question, I am going to share with you the 5-Ws that got me here (you might fit in the same situation):

What?
You have completed the highest degree of education and figured out that you want to learn a new skill, technique, or method to achieve your professional goal. You can be well prepared for the employment of dreams training in a non-permanent position along with the ways to perform independent research.
A postdoctoral associate (“postdoc”) is an early career investigator with the experience of Ph.D. degree who takes on a temporary job to gain further experience.

Why?
To conduct research to strengthen one's CV without the stress of attending classes and other graduation requirements. A postdoc is becoming mandatory for academic scientists. A postdoc is involved in mentoring students, seeking funding, directing projects, while supported by a faculty member.

When?
Take advantage of the enthusiasm and stress relief after the PhD completion may direct you to a shortcut to achieve your goals. That is what I have thought when decided for my postdoc.

Where?
Abroad. Definitely. This is your opportunity to broaden the horizons. In this situation, you have to deal with cultural barriers and it indeed makes you grow up. Whether you are or not a non-developed country native, consider learning from abroad. You will realize that the knowledge you will get is not restrained to the science field.

Who?
As a postdoc, you need a mentor, advisor, or supervisor. You shall seek for someone who not only fits your scientific interests but also is supportive and understands your career ambitions. Choosing the right advisor may be the key for achieving your goals, in addition to providing great education opportunities.

The 5-Ws do not need to be limited to your profession. It is about your life and how you are committed to making a better world.  Have you ever thought about that? On the next post, I will give you the 2-Hs: how I got this position in a distinguished institution and how much it costs.
