Meet the 2021 Young SIOP awardees - Mohammad Alqudimat

Hi there! For the coming weeks, our blog will be dedicated to our Young SIOP Award winners!

Please meet Mohammad Alqudimat, YI from Canada, in his own words.

I am a PhD Candidate at Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, the University of Toronto.

I received my undergraduate degree at the University of Jordan in Amman, Jordan. I also completed my Master of Science in clinical nursing (clinical nurse specialist) from the University of Jordan, focusing on advanced pediatric care.

I started my nursing career in 2005 as a pediatric oncology nurse at King Hussein Cancer Center in Jordan. I received training in pediatric neuro-oncology and ocular-oncology and became one of the first oncology clinical nurse coordinators (i.e., comparable to the Advanced Practice Nursing role) in Jordan. In 2010, I established an evidence-based practice unit at King Hussein Cancer Center that focused on developing nursing practice guidelines to support nurses in providing evidence-based, safe, ethical, and culturally appropriate care. I led that unit for two years.

In 2012, I assumed the role of director outreach nursing at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, USA. Then, I moved to Saudi Arabia and worked as associate director of nursing services for around three years. I started my Ph.D. study in 2017.

My  research interest lies in the area of the use of complementary health approaches in children with cancer. My primary focus is on studying the impact of these products and practices on these children’s health. My first step is to adapt and validate a CHA measure, so this is the focus in my Ph.D. study. I am currently the Co-Chair of the Traditional and Complementary Medicine Working Group as part of the International Society of Pediatric Oncology.
