Meet the SIOP YI Awardees 2020 - Sanjeeva Gunasekera

Please meet Sanjeeva Gunasekera, YI from Sri Lanka, in his own words.


Sanjeeva Gunasekera MBBS MD is a Paediatric Oncologist working at the National Cancer Institute, Sri Lanka. He studied medicine at the University of Colombo and later obtained a MD in Paediatric Oncology from the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine, Colombo. He went on to complete a Fellowship in Paediatric Haematology, Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant from the Birmingham Children’s Hospital, United Kingdom. He is currently reading for a MSc in Global Child Health at the St. Jude Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

He is the founder editor of the Sri Lanka Journal of Cancer and the Convenor of the Sri Lanka Cancer Research Group. He is also a visiting lecturer at the Kotelawala Defence University. Dr. Gunasekera is the national focal point for the WHO South-East Asia Regional Practice Network on Childhood Cancer Initiative.

Dr. Gunasekera’s research interest include access to essential medicines of cancer patients, adaptation of treatment regimens to suit low resource setting and quality improvement in infection control and safe chemotherapy delivery. He has published multiple manuscripts in peer reviewed journals including BMJ, Red Journal and JAMA Oncology. He has ongoing collaborative projects among others with the St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, USA and Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada.
